Wow did we luck out weather wise with our trip to Port Townsend this past weekend. No rain, cool sunny days, it was AWESOME!
My wife and I like staying at Point Hudson RV Park because it is so close to town that we can walk everywhere. Our 3 day runs are broken down into Friday is travel and set up, Saturday is exploring and then Sunday is breakdown and travel home. Port Townsend is only about 75 mins from us so it is an easy drive and we can head up there when I get home from work and still have a nice afternoon or evening.
Note about Point Hudson RV park….plan ahead, this is a very popular park and it is often hard to get a spot so think long term and make your arrangements early.
There are two parts to this park and we definitely have our preferences. As you pull into the RV park on Jefferson there is a right and a left section for parking RVs. We like the right-hand side or the one closest to the point. There are about 8 or 10 sites that are water front, the ones behind have water views.
Part of the same complex are several good restaurants, Shanghai, Doc’s and Point Hudson Café, which is a great place to start out your day with breakfast. Doc’s has a nice patio area for lunch and dinner.
The draw for this location are two-fold, 1) the beach has a beautiful NE view across to Whidbey Island. The scenery is ever changing depending on the weather, birds, rowers, boats and ships. 2) Easy walk into the heart of old Port Townsend, all the shops, Rose Theater and many nice eateries.
Our Saturday started with a nice breakfast at Point Hudson Café. Highly recommended and my new favorite is the Smokin Joe Scramble and a side of bacon served with piping hot coffee…..with that under your belt you are ready to head out for adventure.
Our first stop was the Friends of the Library book sale which was being held at the community center, buck a book and we left with a bag full. $1 also covered the cost of DVDs which we picked up for the RV for those nights that we snuggle down and watch a movie.
We’ve been wanting to check out Fort Warden for a possible camp area in the future. You can see the light house from Point Hudson so it was nice to see it up close. There are two RV places here; one is on the point near the beach and the other is more in the woods. When you come into Fort Warden you come to a stop sign, right to the beach area, straight for the forest setting. Note, this area requires the Discover Pass so I dug mine out and hung it on the rear-view mirror.
There is plenty to explore here, the old abutments, buildings and a couple of museums. Unfortunately, it looks like the Point Wilson light house is not open to the public. This would be a great camp area for kids and bikes, lots of adventures to be had here for sure……..we will be back.
No RV adventure is complete without at least one blunder…..mine was leaving the weather station sensor on the wheels of Rover (hey, its out of the weather and the sun)…I’m sure it is quite unusable now for whoever pulled in after us.
